Worth it to buy a broken 360 to try and fix?

Hey im thinking of buying an xbox 360. Ive never owned a 360 before and only played on like a couple times haha. But anyways i want to get one now, but i dont have lots of money to spend on one. I have been looking around and was wondering if you think i could fix one myself. Ive seen some with the red rings of death problem, wont read discs or open, no video.. Are any of those easier to fix? Any help would be appreciated. if anyone has a broken one they want to sell really cheap let me know or if you have one that works and want to sell for a decent price let me know also. Thanks

Well, if your pretty hand with electronics then yes it is worth it. However!!!! 99% of the broken xboxs you can find on ebay do not come with anything else other than the xbox itself. which means you have to buy a power brick. Lowest I have seen is $40, then you have to buy the av video cable. about $20 depending on the type of cable you want, you have to buy the xbox of course which will run you about $50 with shipping, and a controller $30 depending on what kind you want. Then you have to buy all of the nessasary parts to fix it. About $10 bucks for xclamp fix (OVERHEATING ISSUES) About $40 to fix the DVD issues. So if you have both problems then your grand total is about $190 bucks. You better off buying a new one especially if your not sure if you can fix it. I buy broken ones becuase I know I can fix them and I am not keeping them so I don't have to purchase all of the other stuff. I just sell them without that other stuff. Hope that helps. and good luck on your choice...

Thanks for the response. I have been looking and noticed almost all of them dont come with the cables and controls. I saw a guy on here selling a new power brick for 40 bucks shipped if he still has it and a new A/V cable for 10 shipped. I did find an xbox i might be able to get a hold of WITH the power brick and cables. I never did ask if it had the red rings but he said it has hardware failure when he turns it on it has a screen with a bunch of languages saying that, I thought i read that thats what it is, that says the red rings thing. I did ask him but havent receieved a response yet. I assume he hasnt opened it. I am fairly good with electronics i would think i could do it with a little help just telling me what to do. Im sure i can find a ton of tutorials online. But the only thing is im afraid if i do buy it, there is a chance i wont be able to fix it. And even if i cant fix it myself there is a chance i cant get it fixed at all right?

Buy one with the red lights, send it back to MS and then wait for them to send you another one.

Also i dont care what kind of cables or control i have. Im not picky if its wireless or not. But the one i found he was asking 50 bucks for it and it came with the brick and a/v cable and nothing else. Do you think that would be worth it? The ones on ebay are way too expensive for those broken ones. They go for 100 and over. Im looking at like 50 bucks shipped haha.. I have yet to hear back from the guy to see if he will ship it to me as it was on craigslist but like 2 and a half hours away from me.

You don't need a receipt. The console has to be under than 3 years old which won't be very hard to find and make sure to ask that the warranty sticker hasn't been broken.

I'm pretty sure you just send the console.

I will see what i can do. If the guy replies to my email ill ask him about it. Do you know if the hardware failure means it has the red rings most likely? He never stated that it had the red rings but i assume it does. Do i have to pay shipping to send it there and back?

Sending it back is not a bad idea. I am still a noob when it comes to xboxs and I have been able to fix two. I guess just not being afraid to do it. I found everything I needed online in tutorials. Somewhere, someone has encountered a problem and has a solution. I am suprised I was right on with the prices. I say go for it. The xclamp fix (WHICH IS THE CAUSE OF MOST HARDWARE ISSUES) is really easy to do.
