new 5v source

hey all, it seems my fan header on my motherboard has died. i have whisper fans, and when i switch them to 12v they work fine, but when i switch them down to 5v, they just shut off. i've checked all the connections and everything, and its all wired right. i know of a few other 5v sources on the motherboard, can i just connect one wire to that 5v source and one to a ground?

Yes, you are going to have to have a soldering iron though.

And chances are, the grounds are connected, so the fans are always grounded through the DVD drive. So you probably will only have to solder the 5v wire.

Whip out your multimeter to see where 5v is on the motherboard...

Thanks Madden. i've been doing some soldering for a while now, which im pretty comfortable with (but by no means "good") and i've been able to locate a few 5v sources on the motherboard, so i'll give it a shot after work tomorrow.

thanks!

Alright nice, let me know how it goes. And you might want to post a pic of the 5v source that you are using. Some are more reliable than others. And some, if you overload them and draw too much current you can blow a MOSEFET (I don't know the exact spelling, is it mosfet? or moseft? Idk, but they are the little voltage regulators on board that are those black blocks)

The most reliable power source is right under the power connector on the back side of the motherboard...there are some solder points there but it would be eaiser to solder to the top side of the motherboard...
