RROD on Modded xbox, quesiton on case swapping
Is there any part(motherboard) on the xbox 360 that connects via serial number or something to another part (case) so that if I say sent my xbox back in a friends case (I no longer have original case after upgrading) microsoft would be able to look at it and say wait, this part doesn't fit with this part, we won't fix it? I'm just worried they can check a serial number and match it up (hope this makes sense). If not please let me know, I don't think they'd be able to, but just want to be sure.

Well there is a serial number sticker on the bottom of the metal chassis, I think on the motherboard, and one next to the USB ports on the metal chassis.

I should first mention that I don't actually have a 360...yet, I'm getting one in a few days
But, I've read a bit and isn't there a way you can mod the xbox and fix the RROD? I thought that the "X-Clamp" mod would fix this? Well that's what I read in this post here:
hhhmmm, they won't let me link to a page which is on their own forum
anyway the thread's title is "Just completed the X-Clamp mod....Question " and the post I'm talking about is post number 7
Anyway if you really want to send it in...didn't you keep the stickers which said your serial? If you did then just pull off your friend's ones and stick on yours
But if you leave his ones on I think they can still tell that you have the wrong serial (but they might forget to check and you could get lucky). From what I can tell the xbox knows what it's serial is (and that's how they ban people from xbox live) so if they check it and notice it's different to that on the case you'll have a problem.

now, if I bought the original parts and swapped them out do you think microsoft would take my xbox? It seems there simply wouldn't be a sticker on the back, could I say I accidentally removed it or something? and I could just borrow a friends warranty sticker for under the faceplate, I don't remember one being anywhere else

I would do this. Rip your Xbox down to the motherboard. Look on each side of the motherboard for any type of stickers with numbers on it, if there are any, swap them. And then put your broken motherboard into your friends case, metal chassis, all of his shit. BUT DON'T put your friends DVD drive with your motherboard.
Also you should flash your DVD drive back to stock firmware....

EDIT: so if I do that can I give him the other xbox to use in the mean time, it won't wreck it at all?

if I couldn't find a willing friend, could I buy an xbox 360 premium from best buy, swap out motherboard and DVD Drive, take it back and trade it in for a new one and then sell both of my now working consoles? are the new motherboards compatible with the older cases? it seems that it'll work because all the electronics are connected to the motherboard, only parts that aren't are the case. I was planning on just exchanging for a new one because I think it'd be less obvious if I swapped it out for a working rather than just randomly buying and then returning, what do you think?
