Yea, i kinda like the idea of this but if you have to pay for customization that's just unneeded.

You don't have to pay for anything. Where is this idea coming from? You will probably be able to pay for extra options, but if you don't want them you won't have to get them. Where's the problem?

Apparently you can win items for your avatar in certain games and by earning achievements in games that decide to include a customization prize for unlocking certain achievements. I think the arcade game N+ will include ninja customization options for your avatar if you have the full version unlocked.

im willing to bet that the games that come out after will come with avatar costumes that fit with the game. like fifa you get a soccer uniform from each team.

They won't just be giving away the avatar items. You'll definately have to complete something within the game or unlock achievements in order to earn avatar items. Who knows, microsoft might be ghey and make it so that buying a game will only give you the option to purchase avatar items from that game via the marketplace. Microsoft can be a bit of a bitch when it comes trying to take every penny from gamers' pockets.

^ MS already stated that they'll alow developers to unlock outfits by getting achievements.

I think this new dashboard still looks pretty sweet, i don't know why they are making it so that you basically can have a representation of yourself on the 360.

I don't know how many of you have madden09, but in that game you earn credits for doing stuff like winning games and earning good stats and stuff which I think are going to be used to purchase madden avatar customization options. Can't wait to throw a Colts jersey on my avatar

Should make the avatars and accessories free....already pay $50 a year for live.

Why not? Technically that's what your gamer pic is anyways. (It doesn't have to be an image of you to represent you.) They aren't forcing you to use it. If you want a real answer, it's for the same reason they do everything else: to sell consoles and subscriptions. Duh.

The avatars are part of the fall update, which is free. Most of the accessories will be free. You can't really complain about them charging for optional items... Just don't buy them. You won't be at a disadvantage in any way if you don't pay for a kewl avatar t-shirt or something... Or maybe your internet girlfriend will dump you for a guy with a better avatar, I don't know.

Plus $50 a year is not a lot of money. That's about $4 a month. I can't think of a single other subscription or service I have that is that cheap (apart from magazines). EverQuest cost more a month, and that was years ago for a much less reliable service.
