Exclamation Can connect to Live, but with a Strict NAT

Hello. I'm one of those readers that never post, but since I'm having trouble with something, I figured I might as well ask the best.

My current setup is a modem, laptop, and an Xbox 360. I have the modem connected to my laptop, and I am using the laptop's wireless network card to create an access point that the Xbox 360 can connect to with the Wireless Adapter (my Xbox 360 is a floor above where the modem is so it's tedious to bring it up and down the stairs to establish a direct connection). Notice how I do not have a router at all, so please don't ask about what type of router I have.

I have the wireless connection and the local area connection bridged (laptop is running Windows Vista). I can successfully connect to Xbox Live, but it says that the NAT is Strict. I have forwarded ports 53, 88, and 3074 in both UDP and TCP in Windows Firewall and in McAfee as well. I have also tried ICS but with the same result.

So again: Modem ---> Laptop ---> Wireless Network <--- Xbox 360 w/Wireless Adapter

I hope I supplied sufficient information and that this can be fixed. Thank you in advance.

If you are not too cheap, use a wireless router would be much better idea to avoid all the hassle.

Actually now that I think about it, no I never tried it. I'll try it and see if that helps.

You won't get an Open NAT in that set-up, Moderate at best if you modem is really a modem (and not a router) And Mcafee will certainly be causing you issues...

Shadowman is right. I used to connect to xbox live through my laptop by using ICS. Through that set-up i could never get a open-NAT. Your best bet is to connect your xbox directly to your modem/router.

Yeah I tried disabling both Windows Firewall and McAfee, still got a strict NAT. Thanks for all the help. Any routers you guys would recommend? Something simple will do, I don't need the best router, but one that would definitely work.

never heard of the term strict, moderate or open NAT until now. NAT is NAT, with upnp feature also.
I myself use linksys WRT54GL for a few years, pretty good, never have problem playing games on xbox live.

Im using a rogers usb stick for 3g highspeed over the cellpohones.. the reason i have 2 use it is I can get either wimax slow internet (100+ pings and only 0.75megabit sometimes) and this rogers and its 5.40 mbit and 1.29 megabit upload. the ping is always like 58-67 on speedtest.net toronto.

but Im living with a strict nat ... omg im fed up with it but theres nothing i could do either i turned off avg, the windows firewall , tcp/ip filtering is turned off and allowing all connections and my utorrent on the rogers stick is always RED and not allowing incoming connections. but it means I can only play with people with a open nat and with them .. NO lag and voice chat never breaks up .

So the reason im posting this is Id like to know if anyone out there uses a usb mobile internet stick for thier xbox live (couldnt find much on google) and how did u open the nat or even have it moderate?

thanks

Nope sorry:-

Are you connecting your Xbox to a PC/Laptop that uses a 3G USB modem?

Some mobile phone companies are offering internet access via a 3G USB modem that talks to your mobile phone, you can use this to connect your Xbox to Xbox Live (via your PC), but it has been found that some setups like 3 Broadband give you a strict NAT, to date there is nothing you can do about this and this is because of the way the service is provided. 3G broadband providers usually allocate you a private IP Address and do the translation (NAT) to a public IP Address themselves outside of your control, leaving you with a strict NAT. So we do not recommend using this method at the moment.
