Help with connection!
Hey,
I recently moved up to my garage (some 30m) from my router. I dont get wireless up there so i attempted to run a loooong ethernet cable up there. I got it up there, only to find that it didnt work. I could only blame it on my xbox as it worked on my laptop.
So then i heard i heard about these homeplugs. Which would cut out the annoying long, weather vulnerable cable. So i get it all set up to find again, the Xbox live connection test fails on the network test. I then did some tests to eliminate the faults. It cant be my xbox as it doesnt work on my laptop either. It cant be my garage because it doesnt work down in the house either (something about a default gateway). So that leaves the problem with either the plugs of my router. I run the ethernet cable straight from my router. Any help would be much appreciated!
thanks

Is your wireless router encrypted? This can cause problems since you have to enter the encrypted password to access the router. Other than that, I'm not too sure how to solve this issue

Not this. Encryption is only valid for wireless connections, and he states it's wired. How is the Xbox set up to connect to the network? Is it confuigured to auto detect the IP etc etc? What router are you using?

yeah man, my xbox is on the automatically find everything setting. DNS, IP etc. I was thinking doing it manually and getting my ip from my router and inputting that to the xbox but i dunno how to get my ip and whether to use a dynamic or static one :s do i use my LAN ip address? My router is a D-Link DSL-G604T wireless adsl router. It says its compatible (apparantly). To me there isnt a logical explanatrion for why this isnt working. Ive tried everything. Maybe im being stupid :|

I would try manually assigning an IP, since you have to manually set an IP: for the router to forward ports 80 and 3074 for Xbox Live. I'm not familiar with the D-Link routers, but if you connect to the router with a computer, and click start, then run and type cmd, then in the new window type ipconfig /all you'll see a load of guff appear.
The bits you're interested in are IP address, Subnet mask (should be 255.255.255.0), and default gateway (likely 192.168.x.x).
The default gateway is your routerr IP on the LAN and I would think that typing this into the address bar of your browser will take you to the login screen for your router. Check the Router documentation and/or manufacturer website for details as to how to log into your router if you don't know how.
Basically if your router had an IP of 192.168.x.x, set your Xbox to have a static IP address of 192.168.x.100 since this will avoid clashes with other devices (unless you have 100 devices!!). Then set DNS and DHCP settings to the default gateway IP (192.168.x.x). When logging into your router and forwarding ports forward ports 80 and 3074 to your Xbox's static IP (ie 192.168.x.100) and go from there. Good luck!

Lol thanks scooter. I was about to skip posting in this thread because I can't be arsed to type up another long post (I'm extremely lazy but like to help people out) but you posted what I would've. I would give you rep if I could.

alright mate, thanks a lot, really good help. Ill give it a go. One thing when doing it though: I found my routers internet page and looked around for a bit. I found the port forwarding section and click on that. However, when there i have no clue as to how to open port 80 and 3078. I cant get a link to the page as you'll need a password but here is all the text from it. Each catgegory has a number of options which dont make any sense to me!
Port Forwarding
Choose a connection PPPoA_0_38
LAN IP 192.168.1.2/192.168.1.4

I'm not very familiar with this type of router (if it was a Linksys/Cisco, Netgear or Belkin I'd be more help!), but I have highlighted the sections you need to adjust. Make sure you write everything dowen before you change it so if it screws up you can put it back to the original settings lol
Firstly I would think that the LAN?IP settings need to be changed so that one of these settings is the same as the IP on your Xbox (as I suggested 192.168.1.100 (I'm guessing you currenlty have a PC and another device connected to the router to give you the 2 IP's of 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.4) See if you can add or change one of these to 192.168.1.100.
Secondly I would guess that you would choose the Games option under that but I really can't say for sure. Try fiddling a bit and see what happens... somewhere along the line it should let you input 80 and 3074. If it gives the option for UDP and or TCP against those numbers choose both UDP AND TCP
