merging gamertags?
I got a question.
When I first got my xbox, I didn't have live, so I made a local account (MIKE) and started playing single-player games.
I got Live last week, and made a new gamertag (CHIPTER).
My question is this:
Can I merge MIKE into CHIPTER, so that my XBL account has all of my achievements and saves?
Or do I have to start all of my games over?

based on how i'm understanding what you're trying to do, i think you can. i only say that cuz i think that's what i did, not really trying to. i had my xbox for about a week before i signed up for live, in which time i was using one profile name. i signed up for live using a different name as my tag. for me, it automatically renamed my profile to my newly created tag. it still has my record, user stats, and the ring builder crap in madden, which is all i've checked. never checked saved replays or other stuff, but i'm assuming it's there too since my record and stuff are.

I was the in the same situation and couldn't merge them. Some of the games I played them again....

I'm in the exact same boat, word for word.
I contacted xbox to see what the "smart guys" over there could come up with. I have a problem with there solution, it almost sounds like there giving me directions to change the "Name" of my gamertag, thats not what I want; I want to just have my offline tag of "Matt" which I created on day one be my online tag. My current online tag of "DriftDiveR" could go by the way side for all I care, but it is my current online tag that I setup when I used my 1 month free deal.
I just went saturday and got the halo 3 12+1 card and would like to have everything taken care of this week.
Well I guess i'll stop my rant and post xbox's email on this topic:

Thank you for writing Xbox Customer Support!
I am sorry for the inconvenience and as I understand, you would like to change your gamertag.
Before Xbox 360, you could not change your original gamertag, except in certain abnormal circumstances. This policy is changed for Xbox 360. If you are an Xbox 360 user, you can now purchase a gamertag change in the Xbox Live Marketplace by using 800 Microsoft Points.
To change your gamertag, follow these steps:
Go to the Xbox Live section of the Dashboard.
Highlight your gamercard, and then press the A button.
Select Edit Profile
Select Gamertag.
On the Edit Gamertag screen, complete the required information to complete the process.
Confirm the purchase for 800 points.
It would be great if someone could tell me if this is indeed the answer.
I don't see why it should be such a big problem. "DriftDiveR" has no scores what so ever so loosing it is not a big deal, plus the name isn't doing much for me anymore. I should be able to just swith my offline tag to be my online tag with a name change as i'm sure "Matt" is taken.
I also asked this on another thread but does anyone know anything about static/dynamic ip setting from your internet service provider. Embarq charges $5 a month for the static option which they claim is for gaming.

What MS say above is not the answer to your question. You can change the name of your gamertag as often as you like (it costs though). However, you can change it to something UNIQUE. You wont be able to change CHIPTER to MIKE or vice versa as it will just state the name is taken.
You cant merge gamertags so that achievements from one transfer to the other. No matter what anyone says, it cant be done.

We'll lets say that i've been playing offline for a few months under the name "A"
Then I would like to start playing online. When I set up my profile I just use my "A" profile, know I may have to change the name to something not taken so I change it to "B". All this would be ok.
So why after only using my free 1 month can I not just cancel all my old online info and start fresh. Surly if I called microsoft tonight as I was getting everything hooked up they could help me with this, its in there power, they just might not exercise it.
