Great guide.

Although i have 1 question...

I know that the router has to be compatible with xbox live for a wireless conection.

I just wondered if this was the case for a direct connection? Because i am spending a lot of money on an xbox and xbox live on saturday and i don't really have enough for a router left. However, i already have a router, but it is a small, crappy make one. Im pretty sure it works, but i thought i would ask if it will affect Xbl or not?

thanks.

Verizon FIOS Actiontec router

just get fios inet and they give you the Actiontec router which is b/g. i was hoping for a/b/g since 360 seems to say a is best as your on diff freq 5ghz then the 2.4ghz cordless phones which i do have and the microwave and neighbors b and g networks.

anyway i seem to almost ge less signal then i did with my cheap regular g netgear router. then i adjusted and got about as much but then it was fluctuating and overall seems to be less.

i'm thinking of getting one of the 2 a/b/g routers that xbox.com lists as compatible with xbl.

the dlink DI-784 or linksys WRT55AG and then daisychain it to the actiontec so t hat i'll actually have a choice on whether to connect to the actiontec or the linksys as both will be possible at least thats what the verizon tech said.

he was unable to get it working with the netgear router though which could be the usual where netgear is more difficult. you are supposed to be able to just disable the dhcp sand he thinks it will be that easy for the linksys.

we'll see.

Great guide. Thanks for posting it.

We have a problem with Madden 2007. All my settings are confirmed and Nat is open. I connect to Madden OK but after finding an opponent it starts to download the roster and then disconnects me.

I am connected using a WAP and a patch cable. Should I be using a crossover cable?

Thanks
Bill

Addendum

Imalucky’s detailed guide is very good. However, some may have the same configuration I have, in which case Imalucky’s guide will not work. I finally figured it out on my own, and here’s how I did it…
I have:
Windows Media Center 2005
Static IP from SBC (it shouldn’t matter if you have a static or dynamic IP, this guide will work for both. I actually have 128 IPS, but I never change the main PC’s IP)
Xbox 360
2 NICs

Unless you have multiple PCs, don’t bother with a hub. It will slow everything down. I have several PCs, but I reconfigured my network to accommodate the Xbox and my HDTV (Sony 50” BRX3).

I will assume you are NOT using a hub, so read on (if you DO have a hub, let me know and I will tell you how to set that up too)…

Note: do not use crossover cables!

Connect a network cable (RJ45) from your modem to the NIC 1
Connect a network cable (RJ45) from the Xbox 360 to NIC 2
Go to “Start“ > “Settings“ > “Network Connection“, right-click on “Network Connection“ and select “Explore“
Select NIC 1 (the fastest NIC, the one that you will use to connect to the Net)
Right-click > “Properties“ > “Advanced“
Select “Allow other network users to connect blah, blah, blah”…
Select “Allow other network users to control blah, blah, blah”…
Click “Settings”
Select DHCP 67, DHCP 68, DNS, Secure Web Server (HTTPS), Web Server (HTTP)
Click “OK“,“OK“,“OK“
Select NIC 2
Right-click > “Properties“
Select “Internet Protocol (in the “This connection uses the following items” list box) and click “Properties”
Select “Use the following IP address” and type in:
IP address: 192.168.0.1
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Leave the rest option blank (don’t type in 0s, just leave them BLANK)
Click “OK”, “OK”, and turn OFF your PC.

Go to the Xbox 360
Go to “System” > “Network Settings” > “Edit Settings”
You will need to set up your IP manually to this:
IP: 192.168.0.2
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.1
Let the Xbox test the settings – it will fail, but that’s OK. The PC is Off, remember?
You will need to se up you DNS manually to this:
Primary: 192.168.0.1
Secondary: 192.168.0.1
Let the Xbox test the settings – it will fail, but that’s OK. The PC is Off, remember?
Turn OFF the Xbox
Start your PC, and wait Windows to load. Once Windows has finished loading, start the Xbox.
Once the Xbox has finished loading, go to “media” > “Media Center” and there you are (I am assuming you have set up the Rollup 2 Service Pack FIRST and the Extender SECOND).
If you are not using Media Center, just go “games,” “XBOX LIVE.”
You’re done.
