Can't sign in to Live unless I load a game?!

Had my 360 for quite a while now, but a couple of weeks ago I found that I couldn't sign in to Live in the dashboard but when a game is loaded I'm automatically signed in. But I can't join or create games, apart from in GTA4, which works fine. As soon as I return to dashboard I'm signed out and can't sign in unless I load a game again. Can anyone help?
