Wireless laptop as a bridge step by step?

So now that Ive got an Xbox finally, all is well but now im trying to get onto live. I see the Wireless Adapter for $99 but as a buddy pointed out, there should be some kind of way to make it get online via my wireless laptop. The laptop gets its internet from a router downstairs but of course its way too far to run a wire from the xbox in my bedroom to the router. Is there a possible way to make the laptop a bridge so that I can play online with the xbox? I googled and yahoo'ed the subject and read so much information that it confused me. One of the more simpler methods said to plug an ethernet cord into the xbox and the other end into the laptop but its not working. Supposedly I am supposed to change some kind of setting on here but my menu is different from his so I dont see the option (this computer has vista by the way) Could someone please help me? The adapter is out of my price range atm since I just bought 3 new games

1. turn off the xbox
2. turn on laptop
3. plug in ethernet cable into laptop and xbox
4. goto network and sharing center located in the control panel
5. you should see your wireless interent hub at the top click "view status"
6. then press the tab "properties"
7. then press the "sharing" tab at the top
8. untick both boxes starting with the bottom one
9. press ok then close the first box
10. then press "view status" again and do the same thing
11. tick both boxes starting with top one
12. press ok
